As the popularity of the Gastric Sleeve grows, many insurance companies are now covering all or the majority of costs related to the gastric sleeve surgery. Numerous companies, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross or Blue Shield, Cigna, Emblem, HealthNet, Medica, Priority Health, and United Healthcare, cover all or portions of the gastric sleeve surgery for patients that meet certain requirements.
Although there are insurance companies that cover the entire cost of the bariatric procedure, the majority will cover anesthesia, the hospital facility use bill, and the fee of the surgeon. This generally covers approximately 80% of the total cost. A standard term utilized by insurance companies is that they will cover what is "usual and customary" for the sleeve gastrectomy. "Usual" is the standard rate charged by the service provider for the treatment and "customary" is the normal rates of the competitors in the same area. This can cause the rate to vastly differ from company to company.

As with Gastric Bypass Surgery, LAP-BAND surgery includes multiple expenses, such as the hospital's facility fee, the fee for the surgeon, pre-op X-ray and lab fees, and post-op fees, including fills and adjustments during the first year after your procedure. There may be additional follow-up costs after surgery, and can include counseling for motivation, exercise, diet, and nutrition, visits with your surgeon and medical staff, and other additional body contour surgeries.

The cost of Gastric Bypass Surgery generally consists of pre-operation laboratory and X-ray fees, anesthesia, hospital facility fees, and the fee for the surgeon. Costs can also fluctuate based on the length of the procedure and how long recovery time lasts. With Gastric Bypass surgery, there are also additional post-operative expenses, including nutrition plans, activity programs, lifestyle modification, and dietary changes. These costs may even include surgeries to remove excess skin, tighten specific areas, eliminate excess fat deposits, and improve muscles that have become loose. Gastric Bypass is an extensive surgery, with multiple methods, variables, and recovery issues, which can all increase costs quickly.
Cost of Additional Procedures
When evaluating the cost of your weight loss surgery, be aware that additional cosmetic surgeries may be required. The follow-up procedures usually take place one to two years after your Gastric Sleeve or LAP-BAND surgery, and can include additional liposuction, tummy tucks, labiaplasty, or breast augmentation.
With regard to follow-up plastic surgery procedures, the more skin and fat to be removed, the longer the surgical time requirement and, in turn, the higher the cost. The facility used for surgery impacts cost as well. You should discuss these procedures and the additional costs with your doctor.
